5-Minute Speech Practice Routine for Late Talkers
Five minutes is enough for a calm start.
Speech practice at home does not need to take a long time. For many families, short and steady practice works better than a long session that ends in frustration.
Minute 1: Choose one sound
Pick one sound for the day, such as M, P, B, T, or D. Stay with one sound so your child knows what to listen for and watch.
Minute 2: Parent models first
Say the sound slowly three times. Let your child watch your mouth. Keep your face relaxed and your voice warm. You are showing, not testing.
Minute 3: Try one easy word
Choose a word your child cares about. For M, try more, mom, or milk. For P, try pop or up. Celebrate effort, not perfection.
Minute 4: Use a short phrase
Try one short phrase, such as “more milk,” “pop up,” or “bye baby.” If the phrase is too hard, go back to the word.
Minute 5: Use it in real life
Bring the word into snack, play, bath, or bedtime. A real reason to communicate is more powerful than repeating words without meaning.
Stop while it still feels good
End before your child is tired. A calm ending makes it easier to try again tomorrow.
