How to Practice the M Sound at Home

M is a gentle starter sound for many children.

The M sound is made with both lips closed and the voice turned on. It can be easier to see because the lips come together clearly.

Show the mouth shape

Put your lips together and hum: mmm. Let your child watch. You can point gently to your lips and say, “Lips together.”

Use words that matter

  • more
  • mom
  • milk
  • mine
  • moon

Pick one or two words. Too many words at once can feel overwhelming.

Try M during snack

Hold a small piece of snack and model “more.” You can also tap more on AAC while saying the word. Give the snack after your child communicates in any way: look, reach, sound, tap, or word.

Try M during play

Use “more” for bubbles, blocks, music, or tickles. Say it slowly and clearly: “mmm-more.” Keep it playful.

What if the sound is not clear?

Accept the attempt. A child may say “uh,” “bore,” “mo,” or only hum. You can gently model the correct sound again without making the child repeat it over and over.
